Steam Distilled Essential Oils

Steam Distilled Essential Oils

A. betulina Oil

A. betulina Oil

Colloquially also known as “round leaf” or betulina buchu oil, A. betulina oil is an essential oil extracted from Agathosma betulina plant material by steam distillation and physical means only. It is characterized by its fresh, herbaceous, green, minty, fruity, black currant, catty, and exotic aroma, in which capacity it is also used in a wide range of flavour formulations, to impart these characteristics, and more specifically as a natural black currant/catty aroma replacer in beverages and confectionary. At lower usage levels it also acts as an excellent overall flavour enhancer, and is especially useful for reviving tropical fruit aromas (e.g. Mango, peach and berry aromas).

Excellent fixation properties make A. betulina oils very useful in fine fragrance formulations too, especially for citrus based or chypre type fragrances that require a more exotic and complex notes.

Two chemotypes of A. betulina plants exists, differentiated by the diosphenol (buchu camphor) and menthone levels in their oils. The former oil, in its pure form, exhibits a more woody and camphoraceous quality, whereas the latter is rather characterized by a warm minty aroma. Both chemotypes of A. betulina, however, contain similar amounts of buchu mercaptan, a thiolated terpene, responsible for buchu oil’s unique aroma properties.

A. crenulata Oil

A. crenulata Oil

Colloquially also known as “oval leaf” or crenulata buchu oil, A. crenulata oil is an essential oil extracted from a closely related species to Agathosma betulina, Agathosma crenulata (fam: Rutaceae), by steam distillation of original plant material and separation of the oil from the water phase by physical means only. A. crenulata oil is characterized by a similar minty, fruity, exotic note as is found in A. betulina oil, but exhibits stronger minty and herbaceous notes due to the fact that this oil contains large amounts of Pulegone (up to 50%), thereby limiting its usage in the flavour industry.

Importantly, A. crenulata oil, like A. betulina oil, also contains significant amounts of buchu mercaptan, and in addition to this, a natural acetylated derivative thereof, buchu thioacetate. Although both have comparable aroma properties, their combination results in a more complex and longer lasting aroma profile for A. crenulata oil (the thioacetate exhibits even greater fixation than buchu mercaptan and is a more stable compound).
